Paper from the February issue of JADA finds that the oral health status of a mother is a strong predictor of the oral health status of her children. They go on to say that information gained from the mother regarding her oral health status is valuable in helping to determine the risk of the child to oral disease.

It is proposed that the new dental contract will have a risk assessment for each patient. If this is to be more accurate for children, it would appear that we need to actively take into account the oral health status of the mother.
